Thursday, April 14th-Friday, April 15th, 2016Steven Kennard Hands-On WorkshopSteven Kennard, internationally-recognized woodturner from Canning, Nova Scotia, will do lead a 2 full-day hands-on workshop. Participants will prepare an African blackwood blank and proceed to make an entire box including polishing. Surface embellishment will be applied to their boxes, working from sample textures on example pieces, using carving tools.

Saturday, April 16th, 2016Steven Kennard DemonstrationSteven Kennard, internationally-recognized woodturner from Canning, Nova Scotia, will do an all-day demonstration/presentation for GBWG. An audiovisual presentation will provide introduction and explanations of his work over the years ending with the Turns video and a brief questions and answers session. After that he will demonstrate the making of a teardrop box in African blackwood, from the raw material to the polished piece. He will go through my procedure for preparing the block for the Lost Orchard box, including fitting the decorative rings. Time will not permit making this box, but following the demo, attendees will know how it is put together. If time permits some texturing techniques will be demonstrated.
Saturday, May 21st, 2016GBWG Monthly MeetingDirk Hoogendoorn will demonstrate an emerging bowl, a process whereby a bowl is turned from a square blank. What is different? When complete, only half of a bowl is exposed; the other half is still part of the original blank. Some challenges and particulars require close attention. Centering, balancing, and hemispherical shape all play major roles in how the finished piece comes out.

Saturday, June 18th, 2016GBWG Monthly MeetingWoodturnings can be embellished by incorporating decorative enamelled pieces as accents. Enamel, more properly, vitreous enamel, is a thin layer of glass, transparent or opaque, heat-fused to a metal substrate. Carl Durance will demostrate the process of creating an enamelled piece, including metal preparation, variety of application techniques of enamel to metal, fusing enamel to metal using kiln or torch, and application of enamelled piece to wood turning. The presentation will cover some of the science behind the process of vitreous enamelling.

Saturday, October 15th, 2016GBWG Monthly MeetingCarl Durance will demonstrate Stave Construction, Linear and Compound. Old wooden pails and kegs (or barrels) were constructed using staves. Learn how to create vessels using stave-construction techniques, both linear and compound, including calculating cut angles (blade and miter) and building a cutting jig and gluing jig. A variety of stave constructed vessels will be shown during the presentation.

Carl Durance will demonstrate the process of working with veneers, including cutting veneers, with xacto knife and fret saw, gluing multi-laminate veneer stacks, adding veneer accents to turning blanks, bending multi-layer veneers into forms, and include an introduction to marquetry and parquetry.

Multi-axis and offset turning open up the lathe to a host of new ideas for the turner. Saturday, April 15th, 2017GBWG Monthly MeetingWyatt Walkem from Toronto Woodturners Guild will demonstrate winged bowls. His demonstration will show the steps he follows in order to produce a rectangular winged bowl, plus look at materials that can be used, mounting the work piece safely, and working with a bowl gouge to perform full bevel riding cuts. The 3 areas he will talk about during the demonstration will be safety, proper techniques to practice, and the line and design of the emerging piece. Examples: deco winged bowl, walnut-purpleheart winged bowl, maple-redheart winged bowl.

Topics will include preparation of the pen blank, mounting, turning, and finishing the pen blank, and assembling the finished pen. The presentation will overview various materials that can be used to turn a pen. A wide variety of finished pens will be displayed. The same procedures apply to a number of other turned items, including key chains, stylus, sewing seam rippers, and more.

The demonstration will include optional augmentations such as, rotatable top, a jewelry tray, and necklace hangers. Making a wig stand will hone your skills in bowl turning and spindle turning. Thursday, April 12th, 2018Glenn Lucas Hands-On WorkshopGlenn Lucas, internationally-recognized woodturner from Co Carlow, Ireland, will lead a full-day hands-on workshop at the GBWG facility in Port Elgin. Art Liestman, internationally-renowned woodturner from Coquitlam, BC, will be doing demonstration of The Lost Wood Process. Spindle blanks made up of 3 laminated layers are turned, the middle layer removed, and then outer layers are joined to create turned object that is not round. This is primarily a hands-on session on making Bravery Bead Bowls, which will be donated to SickKids Hospital. Watch and learn from others working diligently on their own Bravery Bead Bowls, or, just enjoy a chat with others. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the GBWG Bravery Bead Bowl initiative, and participate in this worthy cause. Guild lathes with basic accessories are available for use. Doors open from 10:00AM through 2:00PM, maybe later.

GBWG members may choose to participate in person or virtually via Zoom. The focus of the November GBWG monthly meeting will focus on making teapots by Dave Bell. He will go through the possible variations of making the teapot body, locating the feet, the spout, the handle and the lid, and will discuss options for the design of the teapot base, the spout and the handle. Some emphasis will be placed on the teapots finished surface through various embellishments. Teapot pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Saturday, December 7th, 2024GBWG Monthly Meeting (VIRTUAL Only)Due to nasty weather/travel conditions in the surrounding areas continuing into Saturday morning, the December GBWG monthly meeting will be a VIRTUAL-Only meeting, thus GBWG members may participate virtually via Zoom only. The focus of the December GBWG monthly meeting will be on Christmas ornaments through a series of short demonstrations/presentations by members, including Brian Vaughan, Dirk Hoogendoorn, Jim Scattergood, and others yet to be determined. This demonstration/presentation list is subject to change due to the necessary cancellation of the physical portion of the meeting.
